DKS produced a fesability design for a new replacement 2FE Primary School in the City of York.
Our design needed to resolve several key development constraints including a flood plain site, existing school remaining operational during construction, incorporating a retained part of the existing school and vehicle / pedestrian circulation issues.
We developed a part single/part two storey solution with a compact and efficient floor plan, zoned to enable convenient management of out-of-hours extended use of the school's facilities by the community.
A double-height atrium was located at the heart of the school which provided a centrally located resource area with direct access from all classrooms and an important area for informal social interaction across all age groups.
The school was designed with both flexible and adaptable capabilities and the design was reinforced with a strategy for sustainability and energy efficiency which included using the school building as an educational tool for the children to learn from
